- I volunteered as a teacher at the Grandsons rescue centre for street children in Mombasa in May 2009 and have experienced it at first hand. The impact of not having water and the lack of nutritious food to the children’s health, who live at the centres, increased my enthusiasm to help these children.I was so moved by what I saw and what I experienced and since then in my free time I do volunteer work to help the children who live there. I founded Africa Watoto in July 2009 with the aim to help street children who live at the centre. I volunteered again in January 2010 and I helped in improving the diet of the children by creating a nutritious feeding programme. Since then their diet has been improved and includes vegetables, meat, fish and milk. On my return to London I registered Africa Watoto as a charity to continue supporting the children. Africa Watoto has been established to help the children in various ways such as providing nutritious food, buying clothes, books, organising events to raise money and raising awareness about street children’s life. On November 2010 I left my job in London as a Digital and IT Coordinator and returned to Kenya to work closely with the staff of the rescue centre to advance the education and preserve the health of the children so they can participate in more activities in the future.
