It was my first volunteering experience and I had no idea what to expect, all I knew is that I wanted to be a positive influence, at least in one child's life. The concept that a child has no parents to love and care for their needs is a hard for me to accept. 'Street kids' or 'rat kids' as they are called, they come from the very ugly street life in Mombasa, diseased, unfed and mostly addicted to glue.

I am Hannah, a 22 year old health care worker. I decided to go to kenya as I had previously been to Ghana and wanted to experience other African cultures. This was the most amazing experience of my life and the boys are to thank for this. There are just too many memerobal times to mention so I am going to tell you about a time I took five boys on a home visit to Nairobi. I was asked by one of the boys in my class if I would go with him to visit his parents.

I’m Matt, I’m a 19 year old student from Salisbury in the south of England and I decided after spending much of my gap year around friends, family and in very privileged environments (the French alps in a ski resort!) that I should head out to experience something very different. I decided to go to Kenya, because I’d heard a lot about other parts of Africa and I wanted to see for myself the way of life, the culture, the safari and of course the people!

In May 2009, I embarked on my African adventure not knowing what to expect at all. When I got to Mombasa airport I was picked up by a taxi man called Geoffrey who had a sign saying ‘Grandsons of Abraham’. I was also welcomed by two other volunteers Matt and Stella who were on the same flight and coming to the same project as me.

Between January 2009 and June 2009 I embarked on a life changing trip with one thought on my mind ‘To make a difference’ in the lives of boys who are so much less fortunate than you or I could ever imagine. Hopefully between past and present similar minded volunteers and teaching staff of the ‘Grandsons of Abraham rescue centre’ the boys lives will be a lot happier and safer.

Every day the center provides food for the children and is hoping to manage to keep them fed for the rest of the year.

Projects
A major UK based project with links to the Friends group which is working towards linking individuals, groups and organizations in the UK with Grandsons and its wider community. Currently all funds raised by the Friends group are earmarked for the project.
