Making A Difference in Kenya

Hannah with Rama and Juma at the GOA rescue center

I am Hannah, a 22 year old health care worker. I decided to go to Kenya as I had previously been to Ghana and wanted to experience other African cultures.

This was the most amazing experience of my life and the boys are to thank for this. There are just too many memerobal times to mention so I am going to tell you about a time I took five boys on a home visit to Nairobi.

I was asked by one of the boys in my class if I would go with him to visit his parents, little did I know they lived in Nairobi, 8 hours away. So me, Pamela and five boys headed of for Nairobi. Walking throught Mombasa at night is a daungting thing but all 5 boys stuck by my side to make sure I was safe. This is exactly what the Grandsons boys are like, very caring and loyal. Most people are ashamed of street boys and call them the 'reats of the street', but I felt incredibly proud to be associated with these increbibly brave and determined boys. Once in Nairobi we headed to the slums to take one of the boys home. This boy had left home as his parents could not afford to keep him and there where issues regarding the father. This boy had not been home in THREE years so seeing his parents for the first time in so long was very emotional for him. His mum was so happy to see him and even living in such a tiny room invited him to stay for the school holidays.

We then headed to different areas of Nairobi, taking each boy home to their families, all being greeted with open arms by family and the comunity.

It was such a pleasure to be able to tell their parents how well they are doing and how their sons are growing up to be respectful, caring, kind and hardworking young people. When these boys left home they were nothing but inconvinences or embarrasments, they were now returning as sons to be proud off.

This is just one of the many experiences I had working at the Grandsons of Abraham centre, each one being amazing. The boys and the staff at the centre are brilliant and a pleasure to work with. I would definitely recommend this experience to anyone.
