Volunteer in Africa - Mombasa

Volunteers at Grandsons of Abraham rescue center

Volunteer opportunities

There are many volunteer opportunities at Grandsons of Abraham (GOA) rescue center in Mombasa through all times of the year. There are different projects taking place each month and the volunteers are placed in these according to the needs of the children and the center. The projects are not strictly structured. It is up to the volunteers what they would like to be involved with when they arrive at the center.

There are opportunities for volunteer teachers, teacher assistants and nursery assistants. Other volunteering work could involve construction, building or working on the farm.

You don't need to be qualified to work as a teacher at the center. The GOA volunteers are enthusiastic, self- motivated, hard-working and they want to make a difference in the lives of the street children.

Where it is located

The volunteer base is located in Mtwapa town in Kenya's beautiful Coast Province. It is situated approximately 10 miles from Mombasa. The local people are very warm, simple, friendly and it will not take you long to feel like you're at home.

The GOA rescue center is located in Kikambala and it takes 10 minutes with the local bus to get there.

Volunteer teachers, teacher assistants, nursery assistants

As a volunteer teacher or assistant you will have to take up classes from levels 1-8. The center offers basic education and operates as a school for the kids. The lessons you will be teaching could be English, Maths, Science, Social Studies and C.R.E (Christian Religious Education). The center has its own textbooks so you don't need to bring your own. Of course if you feel like adding something to the teaching lessons you are more than welcome.

As a nursery assistant you will have the opportunity to create various activities with the kids, like drawing, playing games, sing, dance etc. Just bring all your creativity with you.

The classes take place every day from 8:30 am to 15:00pm, Monday to Friday.

How to become a volunteer in Mombasa

To apply for a placement you will need to contact Sister Annet directly at annwanzanzangi@yahoo.com. She is the Volunteers Project Co-ordinators in Kenya.

There is no application fee to become a volunteer. However you will have to pay for your flight, visa, accommodation, vaccinations (ask your doctor about what vaccinations you have to do before you get there) and airport pick up. Most volunteers stay at the volunteers house which is approximately 10 minutes away from the coast. To learn more about accomodation prices speak with Sister Annet. It will approximately be in the range of £60 - £80 per week.

Africa Watoto's aim is to help the center by providing information about the GOA projects and its needs. We also want to help volunteers with any queries that they might have before they go there so they can make the best of it.
